How many water pickups do I need/want?

Bottom drains? Mid water intake? How will I get water out of the pond into my filtration? How water comes out of the pond might determine how many pumps you use. Skimmers can count as one pickup each.

How many pumps do I need?

Single pump for filtration and skimmer - More complicated plumbing, at least two valves needed to regulate skimmer/pond suction from pump. Less up-front cost, less monthly energy cost.

Two pumps - two separate circuits, skimmer and filtration - Monthly energy costs are higher, more plumbing than single pump but less complicated. Much more flexible in terms of routing water.

What am I going to do with the water that comes out from the skimmer?

Single pump - Water goes to pump from skimmer and another pick up with only one discharge, from pump 1, of water to filtration, waterfall, tangible point return, etc. Unless discharge is split, then flow rate is also split.

Two pumps - More flexible, more choices on where to send water because you have two pump discharges, pump 1 and pump 2. Higher flow rates.
